Paul Newman Dies

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 30th, 2008

Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as the anti-hero of such films as “Hud,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Color of Money,” and as an activist, race car driver and food company impresario has died. He was 83. Newman died after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends. He got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world’s most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers. He was nominated for Oscars 10 times, winning one regular award and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including “Exodus,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Verdict,” “The Sting” and “Absence of Malice.” Newman worked with some of the greatest directors of the past half century, from Alfred Hitchcock and John Huston to Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese and the Coen brothers. His co-stars included Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and, most famously, Robert Redford, his sidekick in “Butch Cassidy” and “The Sting.” He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood’s rare long-term marriages. With his strong, classically handsome face and piercing blue eyes, Newman was a heartthrob just as likely to play against his looks, becoming a favorite with critics for his convincing portrayals of rebels, tough guys and losers. “I was always a character actor,” he once said. “I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood.” Newman had a soft spot for underdogs in real life, giving tens of millions to charities through his food company and setting up camps for severely ill children around the world. A screen legend by his mid-40s, he waited a long time for his first competitive Oscar, winning in 1987 for “The Color of Money,” a reprise of the role of pool shark “Fast” Eddie Felson, whom Newman portrayed in the 1961 film “The Hustler.” He won an honorary Oscar in 1986 “in recognition of his many and memorable compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his craft.” In 1994, he won a third Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his charitable work. His most recent academy nod was a supporting actor nomination for the 2002 film “Road to Perdition.” One of Newman’s nominations was as a producer; the other nine were in acting categories. As he passed his 80th birthday, he remained in demand, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the 2005 HBO drama “Empire Falls” and providing the voice of a crusty 1951 car in the 2006 Disney-Pixar hit, “Cars.” But in May 2007, he said he had given up acting, though he intended to remain active in charity projects. “I’m not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to,” he said. “You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that’s pretty much a closed book for me.” Newman’s hair was graying, but he was as gorgeous as ever and on the verge of his greatest popular success. In 1969, Newman teamed with Redford for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” a comic Western. Newman paired with Redford again in 1973 in “The Sting,” a comedy about two Depression-era con men. Both were multiple Oscar winners and huge hits, irreverent, unforgettable pairings of two of the best-looking actors of their time. Newman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the second of two boys of Arthur S. Newman, a partner in a sporting goods store, and Theresa Fetzer Newman. He was raised in the affluent suburb of Shaker Heights, where he was encouraged him to pursue his interest in the arts by his mother and his uncle Joseph Newman, a well-known Ohio poet and journalist. Following World War II service in the Navy, he enrolled at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he got a degree in English and was active in student productions. He later studied at Yale University’s School of Drama, then headed to New York to work in theater and television. Newman is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur.

Biographer Denies Claim

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 25th, 2008

Marilyn Monroe’s biographer has slammed a newly released FBI report that claims she was the victim of a murder conspiracy. Monroe was 36 when she was found lying naked, faced down on her bed at her Brentwood, California home on August 5th 1962. A coroner ruled the cause of death as ‘probable suicide’ by barbiturate poisoning, but many conspiracy theorists believe her rumored affairs had something to do with her unexpected death. Her biographer, Anthony Summers refuses to believe the newly released FBI document, unearthed by Australian filmmaker Phillipe Mora. It claims Monroe was tricked into killing herself by associates who promised she would be rescued in time. Summers, who claims to have had access to the FBI documents over 20 years ago, dismisses the allegations of foul play as unfounded. He says, “I had this document in 1984 when it was first released by the FBI. I had the uncensored version of it the same year. I got it from a private source in California who in turn had been in touch with a man who was eager to lay blame for Monroe’s death at the feet of the Kennedys.”"I didn’t use it because I believed it was full of misguided gibberish and rumor. It’s a shame because there are some real mysteries surrounding Monroe’s death, but I don’t think murder is one of them.”

No Jenna Biopic

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 23rd, 2008

Scarlett Johansson has laughed off claims she will play porn star Jenna Jameson in a Hollywood biopic. Jameson prompted reports recently when she said of Johansson’s performance in ‘Lost In Translation,’, “I remember thinking to myself, ‘this girl has such a sexuality without even really trying to be sexy. I was like, ‘This girl could play me.’”"I love her. She’s amazing. She’s smart, she’s funny. She’s stunning. I don’t want someone who’s going to go in there and be like bouncing around. I want someone who can bring some depth.” But Johansson says she knows nothing of the film project, based on Jameson’s book “How to Make Love Like A Porn,” which is to be titled “Heartbreaker.” Johansson’s representative says, “Scarlett has never seen a script nor been approached about this project. She also has no interest in playing this role.”

Miller Feuds

Sienna Miller has launched a scathing attack on Kate Moss’ much-hyped clothing collection. Miller, who launches her own fashion line with sister Savannah, insists that she began creating her clothing long before Moss teamed up with British chain TopShop. The latest comments fuel a bitter feud between the pair, who are known to be enemies because of Moss’ friendship with Sadie Frost, the former wife of Miller’s ex-fiance Jude Law. Miller says, “Her clothing project was very different with ours. Obviously I would say this, but actually my sister and I started to work on ours before she did, two and a half years ago.”And also, unlike Kate Moss, Sav is a real stylist.”

Gere Arrest Warrant

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 19th, 2008

A judge who issued an arrest warrant against Richard Gere for publicly kissing a Bollywood actress reportedly has been transferred from his job. Judge Dinesh Gupta, a magistrate in the northwestern city of Jaipur, issued arrest orders for both Gere and Shilpa Shetty after the kiss at a public AIDS awareness event in New Delhi. The public display of affection drew an outcry among Hindu hard-liners, with rallies against them held in several cities. But the judge’s arrest order also drew harsh criticism in India, with some lawyers saying it had no legal merit and made the country look ridiculous.Gupta reportedly was transferred from his post to the small town several hours away. The High Court Commissioner C.P. Singh said the transfer was “routine,” but he noted that the order came from a state chief justice. Gupta had issued the arrest warrant following a complaint by a local lawyer, who said the public kiss was obscene. After viewing footage of the event, Gupta called the embrace and kiss “highly sexually erotic.” Gere apologized for any offense he may have caused in India, where public displays of affection are largely taboo. But he also said the whole controversy was manufactured by a small hardline political party.

Theron Sued

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 15th, 2008

Charlize Theron is being sued for wearing the wrong watch on the red carpet of a film festival. Watchmakers at Raymond Weil signed Theron as a spokes model for their $7,000 Shine watches, and were upset when they spotted her wearing a rival Dior watch at a Texas film festival. According to a source, the Theron/Weil deal was worth an estimated $20 million, and now the watchmakers are asking for their cash back. In court papers, they insist Theron is guilty of breaching a contract and promoting a competing watch. Weil attorney David Jaraslowicz says, “If you’re the model for Ralph Lauren, you can’t show up wearing Gucci at the Academy Awards. She undercut our entire ad campaign. We spent a fortune on an ad campaign centered around her, then she goes off and makes us look silly in the industry by wearing Dior.”

Douglas Was Willing

Movie legend Kirk Douglas became a willing victim of statutory rape when he lost his virginity to a school teacher when he was just 15. In his autobiography “Let’s Face It - 90 Years Of Living, Loving And Learning,” Douglas confesses he didn’t realize his lover could face prison for their affair, but still doesn’t regret a thing. Recalling the tryst, he writes, “I had been a ragamuffin kid of 15 coping with a neighborhood filled with gangs. Under her guidance I became a different person. I am eternally grateful. By today’s standards she would have gone to jail. I had no idea we were doing something wrong. Did she?”

McConaughey Case Dismissed

Matthew McConaughey is sighing with relief after a Los Angeles judge dismissed claims by an obsessed fan that he had raped, drugged and tried to kill her. Ashley Moye, 39, filed the bizarre lawsuit alleging McConaughey had stalked her and attempted to murder her, but a judge has thrown out the case. In legal papers, Moye claimed she and McConaughey were lovers when they were teenagers but they fell out when she dumped him for another guy. She alleged they met years later while they were both studying Scientology in Hollywood, where he raped her after she refused to marry him. Moye also claimed the actor once attempted to knock her out with drugged milk and filmed the couple having sex and then handed the tape to his pals.

Moss’ Sex Tape Fears

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 5th, 2008

Supermodel Kate Moss is desperate for ex-boyfriend Pete Doherty to return two videotapes documenting the former couple’s daily activities, because she doesn’t want to be humiliated if they end up on the internet. The couple made eight video diaries during their turbulent relationship. After their split, Moss found six of the tapes but is concerned that Doherty, who is a self-confessed drug addict, could sell the missing two. Moss reportedly dumped Doherty earlier this month and is said to be anxious about the whereabouts of the missing video diaries, fearing they could fall into the wrong hands and end up on the internet. She and Doherty regularly took a video camera with them on their travels and some of the clips have already been posted on the web by the couple before they separated. One short video featured the pair singing together and Doherty serenading a scantily-clad Moss. The source added: “When those clips came on the net, Kate could obviously decide with Pete what was going to be made public. Now, with the remaining two tapes, she has no say.”She is allegedly worried Doherty could resort to selling the remaing footage for money after he suffered a relapse in his efforts to kick his heroin habit. A source claims, “There are still some bits and pieces floating about of Pete with Kate. She has got rid of most of it. Six out of eight tapes have been destroyed. But she wanted to bury the lot before he could humiliate her by selling them or putting them on the internet. Pete could do what he wants with them.” Referring to the video clips previously posted online, the source adds, “If they made that public, just think what could be on the tapes they held back.”

Duchovny’s Addiction

Posted in celebrity gossip on September 2nd, 2008

The truth is out there, whether we want it or not.David Duchovny has checked into rehab to undergo treatment for sex addiction.”I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction,” Duchovny said in a statement released Thursday by his attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein. “I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”The 48-year-old X-Files star who, ironically, won a Golden Globe this year for playing an over sexed struggling writer on Showtime’s Californication has been married to Tea Leoni since May 1997. They have two children together, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd Miller, 6.”All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time,” Richard Licata, the network’s executive VP of Corporate Communications, said in his statement. The second season of Californication, premiering Sept. 28, finished shooting late last month and 12 episodes are ready to go.Though it may have been awhile, this isn’t the first time Duchovny’s sex life has turned into a talking point. “I’m not a sex addict,” he said in an interview with Playgirl in 1997. “I have never been to those meetings. It’s hurtful to my family and if I was involved with a woman in a monogamous relationship, it would be hurtful to her.”There was another story claiming I was a neat freak. If I had to choose one of the two, I think I’d rather be a sex addict. It’s not funny and I’ll be glad when it goes away.”Uncomfortably enough, Leoni herself quashed a rumor that her hubby was afflicted with a sex addiction back in May of 1998, telling Elle that she found the notion “very exciting.”"David was accused of being a sex addict,” Leoni, who had been married for one year at that point, said. “Which I always found very exciting. And then I found out it wasn’t true.”"Men are like bulls,” she continued. “They gotta get the new cow. Maybe you’ve got to get the bull after he’s had a lot of cows, so you might just be the last new one.”
